Dillenia suffructicosa is the most common Dillenia with large yellow flowers. D. suffructicosa grows in poor sandy coastal soils and degraded land.  Along river banks and inland forests Dillenia suffructicosa is replaced by  Dillennia beccariana and Dillenia excelsa.

Dillenia suffructicosa is distinguished by the persistent hairless leaf wings which cover the leaf stalk.  In Dillenia beccariana the “wings” are hairy and only present in young leaves.
