Gluta velutina: Drift seed

ABOVE: The strange ridged fruits of Gluta velutina are relatively common on the coastal beaches of Brunei Darussalam including, Serasa beach in Brunei Bay and Tutong beach.

When fresh fruit are cut open they exude a white milky latex which soon turns black  typical of the Anacardiaceae (mango) family.

Although this tree is common in the Berau river we did not find any examples of the trees or fruits on Pualu Maratua  which is around 30 km offshore opposite the entrance to the Berau river indicating that Gluta velutina fruit do not survive for long in sea water.
