Eugeissona utilis: Introduction

ABOVE: Eugeissona utilis the Wild Sago palm of Borneo (Local names Pantu, Rumbia bukit )  is  a non-descript and un-distinguished palm until it flowers and fruits when it is transformed into one of Borneo’s most spectacular plants. E. utilis  palms grow in clumps and each individual stem flowers only once (hapaxanthic) in a spectacular “big bang” before dying.

These  E. utilis stems have recently flowered, whilst young palms in the same clump are still growing next to them. The mature seeds can still be seen on the central flowerhead.

For closeups of the actual seeds see this link.
