Garcinia morella (Asam gelugor): Cultivated

ABOVE: Garcinia morella  (Local name: Asam gelugor). Often illustrated as Garcinia cambogia or Garcinia atro-viridis.

Occasionally  cultivated in home orchards in Borneo but rarely seen in markets. The tree is  is believed to be native to the forests of Malaya north to Cambodia and Vietnam.

The whole fruit is dried and chipped and sold as a weight loss supplement in many health food stores.

In Borneo the fresh sliced fruit is used as lend a sour taste (asam) to cooked fish as with Garcinia dulcis.
