Xylocarpus moluccensis: Drift seed

Xylocarpus moluccensis MELIACEAE

Local name: Nyireh batu

Two small mangrove trees with very large fruit can be found growing along the Borneo coast. The large angular corky nuts are a very common drift seed on sandy beaches.

Xylocarpus moluccensis  has the smaller fruit which reach a maximum of 11 cm diameter. X. moluccensis is also much less common than Xylocarpus granatum. Xylocarpus granatum fruit reach 25 cm in diameter.

The individual nuts/seeds of the two species are similar and cannot be told apart.
